🚀 interpack on Tour: Connecting with Taghleef Industries at the European FlexPack Summit 📦♻️ Our colleague @Angelika Spies had the opportunity to visit the European FlexPack Summit, where she engaged in insightful discussions with @Mario Molinaro, @Monica Battistella and @Maria Monique Murillo from @Taghleef Industries. ❓ What innovations are currently driving the development of flexible packaging? 💬 "Flexible packaging scope is to protect the products and avoid food waste, the key trends driving its innovation: Sustainability with Recyclable mono-materials: Packaging made from a single type of material is easier to recycle (PP or PE)  Bio-based and compostable materials: Reducing reliance on fossil fuels and minimizing waste. Lightweighting: Using less material overall to reduce waste, (thin film materials) and PCR Chemical recycling. Enhanced Functionality with improved barrier properties: Protecting products from oxygen, moisture, MOB, Aroma and other elements to extend shelf life and product quality." ❓ What challenges do you see for the industry and how are you addressing them? 💬 "Sustainability, End-of-Life & cost pressure: Challenge: Lack of infrastructure for collecting and sorting flexible packaging. Consumer confusion about what can be recycled. Achieve the fit for use in the application. Sustainable materials and new technologies can be more expensive. Industry Response: Mono-materials: Significant investment in developing mono-PE and mono-PP structures that offer performance comparable to multi-layer while being recyclable. Bio-based/Compostable: Research into materials like PLA, PHA, and cellulose-based films. Challenges remain with cost, performance, and compostability infrastructure. Chemical Recycling: Emerging technology, but still early stages. It needs scaling and further development to be economically viable and environmentally sound. Lightweighting: Continuous improvement in film technology allows for downgauging (reducing thickness) while maintaining performance; Efficiency Improvements: Optimizing production processes; Economies of Scale: As demand for sustainable materials increases, costs are expected to decrease; Value Proposition: Communicating the value of sustainable packaging to consumers and brands, justifying the potentially higher cost. Consumer Perception: Challenge: Negative perceptions about plastic packaging in general. Confusion about recyclability. Industry Response: Education: Communicating the benefits of flexible packaging and its sustainability progress. Transparency: Being open about the challenges and the steps being taken to address them. Consumer-Friendly Labeling: Clear and consistent labeling to help consumers understand how to properly dispose of packaging. 🚀 interpack on Tour: Sustainability & Innovation with Biriz Ambalaj 📦🌍 At the European FlexPack Summit, our colleague @Angelika Spies had the opportunity to speak with @Ayda Yaşamalı at @Biriz Ambalaj A.Ş, about the future of sustainable flexible packaging. ❓ What innovations are currently driving the development of flexible packaging? 💬 "The flexible packaging industry is moving fast with a strong focus on sustainability, efficiency and performance. At Biriz Flexible, we are working on mono-material packaging solutions that are fully recyclable. We are also including post-consumer recycled (PCR) content and replacing conventional multi-layer barriers with fully recyclable, high-performance films. Our goal is to create strong packaging that reduces the material use while still offering excellent product protection." ❓ What challenges do you see for the industry and how are you addressing them? 💬 "One of the toughest challenges right now is to find the right balance between sustainability and performance while also keeping up with changing regulations and meeting consumer expectations. We are tackling this by developing high-barrier recyclable packaging solutions, using ISCC PLUS-certified PCR materials and refining our supply chain to improve both cost efficiency and environmental responsibility. We also invest highly in R&D to help our customers transition smoothly towards more sustainable solutions in their packaging." 🚀 interpack on Tour: Meeting Industry Leaders at the European FlexPack Summit 📦♻️ At the European FlexPack Summit, our colleague @Angelika Spies had the opportunity to meet with @Tony Carney, European Key Account Manager at @Innovia Films, to discuss the latest developments in flexible packaging. ❓What innovations are currently driving the development of flexible packaging? 💬 "The flexible packaging industry is experiencing significant advancements driven by several key innovations. The publication of the final version of the PPWR, alongside EPR, are driving packaging companies, brands and end-users to ensure their packaging is recyclable. This primarily entails the move to mono-material laminate structures, especially PP based materials. Furthermore, innovations in barrier technologies have improved flexible packaging's ability to protect products from external factors like oxygen, moisture, and light. These advancements not only help in extending product shelf life and maintaining quality, which is particularly crucial in the food and beverage industry, but also help to reduce food wastage and the carbon footprint of the product."   ❓What challenges do you see for the industry and how are you addressing them? 💬 "Top level PPWR guidelines are now clear but precise details of how things will work in practice remain uncertain. Secondary legislation is therefore vital, but this could be 2+ years away and organisations such as CEFLEX and Recyclass are not always aligned on their advice which causes more confusion, we therefore have to make educated guesses regarding what is likely to be mandated. When replacing existing constructions with recyclable mono-material structures some compromises on properties may need to be made e.g. PP can never have the same heat resistance as PET. Consequently understanding where these compromises are acceptable and pushing the boundaries are critical." With interpack 2026 on the horizon, the demand for flexible, lightweight and recyclable materials continues to grow. Among the key takeaways: @Cagri Turkmen from @Henkel shared valuable insights: ❓What challenges do you see in the industry and how do you meet them?   💬"Henkel foresees major shifts in the packaging sector, driven by sustainability regulations and changing consumer demands. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) in Europe, set to take effect by 2030, will force the industry to accelerate efforts toward reducing waste, enhancing recyclability, and adopting sustainable materials. The key to overcoming challenges in the flexible packaging industry is early collaboration. At Henkel, we engage with our customers right from the start of packaging and product development, bringing in our packaging experts to co-create tailored solutions. Additionally, strong partnerships along the value chain are essential to drive innovation and ensure compliance with evolving regulations like the PPWR. To further strengthen our approach, we continuously build internal expertise and develop assessment systems, enabling us to enhance our knowledge, increase flexibility, and respond with agility to market demands."   ❓What innovations are currently driving the development of adhesives and packaging materials for flexible packaging?   💬"At Henkel, we are continuously developing new solutions to support sustainable packaging designs and regulatory compliance. Examples include recycling-compatible adhesives and coatings for mono-material packaging structures, high-performance barrier coatings and adhesives that contribute to emission reduction. A key innovation is our RE range, featuring laminating adhesives and coatings specifically optimized for recycling processes and certified as compatible with recycling."
